" Gabino Barreda "

A reformer of the education in Mexico.

Gabino Barreda was born in the city of Puebla in the state of the same name in 1818.

From very small he demonstrated to be a brilliant student and at the age of 26 years he studies for to be a doctor. In 1847 he participated like a surgeon during the North American invasion to our country.

During a stay in Paris he knows the Positivist Philosophy by Agusto Comte, which would influence in his suggested model of education.

President Benito Juarez chose to Gabino to form a committee dedicated to reform the education in Mexico. For Barreda the Mexican system of education had to be reconstructed if they were wanted to reconstruct the society.

The system in which Barreda believed had to be based on sciences and to demonstrate his ideas the Preparatory National School founds on 1867.

In the establishment of his program Gabino Barreda chose well prepared professors achieving a great success, in spite of the doubts in his ideas.

During the decade of the seventies of 1800 a modernization was being carried out and the reformists of these years wanted to Gabino Barreda outside the Preparatory National School.

This struggle ended with the resign of Barreda and he had to accept a diplomatic position in Germany in 1878, which was a way of exile. Gabino Barreda dies in the city of Mexico in 1885.

At the present time exists a prize : The Gabino Barreda Medal which is given to the students who have concluded their degree, masters and Doctorate with the highest qualification of their generation.
